While a deep strain of anti-Semitism has long existed in Russia, it is fair to say that the current climate is more favorable to Jews than it has ever been. Of course, in the last 30 years, the majority of the nation’s Jews has left for Israel or the United States, and many of those who remain do not have a strong connection to the religion. Anti-Semitic outbursts from politicians still do occur. But Mr. Putin has spoken out against anti-Semitism, and there is no indication that the kind of state-sponsored anti-Semitism that had long been a characteristic of Russia has any chance of being revived.
