Despite his glowing reputation in the West, Mikhail S. Gorbachev, the last Soviet leader, has little if any influence in Russia.
He is generally respected here, though some scorn him for bringing about the downfall of the Soviet Union.
Mr. Gorbachev has supported Mr. Putin, crediting him with helping to restore stability in the country and urging the West to give him more time to develop Russia’s democracy.
This stance has bothered some of Mr. Gorbachev’s supporters, who contend that Mr. Putin is in fact betraying the movement that Mr. Gorbachev launched in the 1980’s.
