Gorbachev influence on Russian politics

Postby richardr75 » 03 Feb 2009, 22:09

Putin has been reportedly assuming an undemocratic role in the Russian politics for sometime. What is the response of Gorbachev to this development? Does Gorbachev has any influence on Russian politics now ?

Despite his glowing reputation in the West, Mikhail S. Gorbachev, the last Soviet leader, has little if any influence in Russia.
He is generally respected here, though some scorn him for bringing about the downfall of the Soviet Union.
Mr. Gorbachev has supported Mr. Putin, crediting him with helping to restore stability in the country and urging the West to give him more time to develop Russia’s democracy.
This stance has bothered some of Mr. Gorbachev’s supporters, who contend that Mr. Putin is in fact betraying the movement that Mr. Gorbachev launched in the 1980’s.

From an outsider's point of view, I think that last think Russian politics need is any influence from Gorbachev.
I don't think that Gorbachev has anything to bring to Russia anymore.
Nobody should forget that the instability of the 90s was caused by the chaos he left behind.
